Back to the Isle of Mull

As part of a project we’ve been working on for the past six months with Crown Estate Scotland, we’ve been travelling across the country to document the important work of Crown Estate Scotland (CES). Having been in Spey Bay in the North East of Scotland the previous week and then Ardfern we were now heading west to make our way across to the Isle of Mull. It was good to be heading back on Mull, having filmed there and Ulva last summer with National Museums Scotland for their Collecting The Present series.

We stopped over in Oban and were treated to this view looking out from our hotel as we eat dinner and discussed plans for the coming days.

We were up early for the first morning ferry to start our filming at a local mussel farm. It wasn’t long after our arrival that we were making our way out to the mussel lines strewn across a small Sea loch on a small outboard motor.

Tim and Jon then set about documenting the operations abroad a mussel farm vessel before launching our little Mavic drone to capture some aerial perspectives of this farm set in the beautiful landscape. Operations here have long served the mussel eating communities of Europe and it’s great to see such a thriving industry doing so well here under the excellent management of Douglas Wilson.

Our next stop, a small Oyster farm off the West coast of the island to meet a farmer who has been raising Oysters on the island for decades.

Soon we were driving north to the harbour at Tobermoray to meet the harbour master there and see how this harbour and specifically the marina has been transformed in recent years with a complete re-structure of the mourings and harbour operations.

Just a very fleeting visit it felt like but came away with a renewed understanding of the Island and definitely a sense that we’re getting to know this Island’s history.

Will be back in a couple of months when the Mull Car Rally comes to the island.
